The Bradford murders

Do a news search regarding the Bradford murders and you'll quickly spot that the police have been questioning a suspect. Well that's a good thing isn't it? Well yes until you start looking at how some of the media are reporting it.

Stick to the 'quality' newspapers and you'll read how a suspect has been brought in over a murder, read some of the tabloids and you'll discover how a suspect has been brought in regarding the three murders. Guess which set of papers is reporting the facts and guess which are extrapolating?

Yep there's been one murder, or to be precise one set of body parts found which is a suspected murder. The other two women named are just missing though police suspect them of being murdered.

However read something like the Daily Mail and you get:

'Criminology PhD' student quizzed over killings of three women
Oh not murders but "killings"
The three women over whose deaths he is being questioned - MIss Rushworth, Miss Blamires and Miss Armitage
Except only one of those is known to be dead the other two are missing. But what about the suspect himself what does the Mail have to say about him?
Neighbours described curly haired Griffiths as a 'bit of a Goth' who claimed he was doing a 'PhD in murder'.
Oh got to be guilty then but wait isn't he doing a criminal justice studies course specialising in homicide? I don't know about you but that could be half-jokingly be referred to as a "PhD in murder", he's still a Goth though and neighbours called him "the weirdo". More damning yet he posted shirtless photos of himself on MySpace and quoted Pulp Fiction. His list there of favourite music videos include Queen, Sisters of Mercy and Duran Duran and
The site lists his favourite books as professional academic literature on aggregate homicide, multiple homicide, capital punishment and targeted political homicide.
Gosh how surprising for someone doing a criminal justice studies course specialising in homicide. I mean Gods why didn't the police pick him up sooner, a bit of a loner, bit of a Goth who likes Queen videos and study books he's obviously a rampaging serial killer; well at least he would be in Mail world.

Oh and apparently the police have shut down his MySpace page, um how and under what authority? More worrying is that they've also moved to shut down his "linked pages" gosh I hope he's not got a link to the BBC's news site that'd cause some problems when they shut that down.

Pathetic isn't it when the tabloids get their teeth into a nice juicy story. You can almost picture the reporters salivating as they discover that he liked gangster films such as Reservoir Dogs and Scarface or that he "usually wears a long black knee-length leather coat" the floor at the Mail must have just been sticky with excretions.

Never mind if it turns out he's not guilty of anything I'm sure the Mail will publish a front-page story on how he's really nice, and not a loner living in a "grubby" flat; yeah right.

You know what I bet he plays video games too, the fiend.

Well, I'm sure that the police aren't questioning him because he's a bit goth. One would hope that the police are a bit more professional than that. In fact, we don't know why they are questioning him, as yet. And it may turn out that he's totally innocent of anything — in which case, way to go ruin somebody's ****ing life, mass media! How many people do you think will invite him to their next summer BBQ?

Still, people have this strange perception that the media exists to keep the populus accurately informed about current events. As far as I can tell, this isn't true. The media exists to distort the truth as much as possible to make something that will be entertaining to read (and hence sell more copies). Yet people somehow expect it to be factual

Yes one assumes the police have more to go on than 'a bit weird'

But how do you find an impartial jury if it does go to trial, one that won't be influenced by the "weirdo" accusations batted about by the media?

Of course if it turns out to be a false accusation he can sue all the newspapers that have indeed ruined his life; if he's got the money for it... wait he could sell his story to the Mail "How the Daily Mail ruined my life" I'm sure they'll run with that.

But yes the media have no regulations to be unbiased or report only the facts only the newspaper-led PCC to turn to if they do state blatant untruths.

With perhaps a push to overhaul our archaic brothel laws. If these women were able to operate out of licensed premises they wouldn't need to walk the streets looking for trade.

They could also get treatment for their drug addiction in a supportive atmosphere.
