Police Brutality and Ian Tomlinson?

For those not keeping up with the news a man died from a heart attack at the G20 protests, police said it was nothing to do with them and when they moved in to help after the collapse they were pelted with bottles.

Now we have a couple of videos being circulated, most importantly one shot prior to Ian Tomlinson's collapse. GMTV showed us only the most damning bit, BBC showed more and as a result of which provided a better context.

Here's how I view it - the police move in down the street, presumably in an attempt to corral the protesters. Ian is seen on the right simply sauntering along, hands in pockets. At this point the officer with the dog (brown) to the left seems to purposefully move around the bollard in front of him so as to intersect with Ian's path, as the camera moves right we see that another dog (black) handling officer has moved in from the right both officers seem to try to move Ian away with a light shove. The black dog then starts to follow and harass until pulled back in; Ian appears to be trying to walk away.

However this action puts him on a course with the line of police who have moved in ahead of him. At this point an officer who previously seen second from the right with a baton casually resting on his left shoulder moves in around the black dog as it was harassing Ian and as it's pulled back sends Ian sprawling. Judging by the distance he moved across this was one hefty push.

Two passers-by help him to his feet while the rest of the line of police halt and mill around. The officer who performed the shove is seen in the background in the same baton on shoulder pose before he walks off to the right and is lost from shot.

In a second video, which I can't locate a link for, we're shown the aftermath with Ian collapsed on the pavement surrounded by police. A bottle is thrown which misses everyone and as one the protesters turn to prevent any more.

We all know that facts get blurred in the moment of action, but look at the first statements given out by the police -

Deny responsibility.
Focus attention elsewhere.

This is the the standard knee-jerk reactions we'd expect from any private firm that looks out only for itself and yet over the last few years, as the police have been given wider powers they seem intent on misusing, this appears to have become the standard policy of the police force. An organisation we pay for supposedly to defend us.

[Additional - Just a thought the SOP appears to be -

1. We had nothing to do with it
2. Yes we did it but he/she/they deserved it
3. We've got a dangerous job in trying times.

In this case we seem to have skipped past two because no-one had any thought that the police might have been involved. Now the videos are out expect a lot of testimony that Ian Tomlinson was 'acting shifty', or getting into 'fights' with the police prior to the video footage]

Ah yes this is the Channel 4 ITN footage, which sadly also doesn't show the baton hit directly as someone walks in front of the camera at that exact point.

Also worth noting that as I predicted 'news' is being put out about events prior to the footage about Mr Tomlinson blocking a police van etc. so 'he deserved it'.

Brainwashing TV im glad i rarly watch it.Crazy talk that he could deserve such treatment, but i think there was a interview which u can see on the web with channel 4 talking to Ken Livingstone about some of those "officers" being private security.....erm thats a little mad to me. So its police force to the highest bidder now ?

And these ppl are beating those suppost to be looked aftre by the "normal" police. It might explain in the past with police brutality not being the "normal" force but these "hired goons" ?

Well the latest is the attack on the female protester which from the footage shown appears to be a back-handed slap followed a little later by a baton to the legs.

I hadn't heard about private security, but I did hear mention about some members of the TA being there.

As for the police force being for the highest bidder - yup been that way for a while now ever since the top job at the Met was politicised.

Something Shami Chakrabarti of Liberty just asked today was what instructions had the police been given; do they have the view that dissent should be crushed or that dissent should be managed?
