Building and road work
The old petrol station site on Vale Road has now been cleared for the sheltered accommodation to go up and Jim tells me of the road closure on Wilden Lane. The official report states that it's for three days between the 31st and the 8th and extends for the entire length. On the one hand that may mean less traffic from Hartlebury Road, on the other the same as they simply come down from the A449.
The work is listed as Highway Maintenance/Improvement. Seeing as I simply don't use that road anymore due to the poor state it's always in it will be interesting to see what will be done.

I think that's what everybody is thinking. When the signs went up for a weeks closure. We were hopeful that they were going to do the whole road, but from previous experience this is unlikely. I am guessing it will be another patch job that lasts a while and back to square one. Also, what if we have more cold weather? Surprised they didn't do this closer to spring. I may be pleasantly surprised, but not holding my breath. They have been patching it for a few years now. The only reason we use it is the fact we live in The Grove, so rather than go through town and along the dual track to Kiddy, getting stuck as always in the Lyle Avenue/Foley area, we take Wilden Lane. Also, the missus works at the Harriers. So its the obvious route. I am afraid, like most roads and surfaces these days, they dont seem capable of dealing with the amount of traffic that uses them. You don't even get lorries down there really, apart from delivery to business, but the surface is always falling apart. Maybe we should think of concrete, as you still get on some motorway sections. Especially for the more troublesome routes. I am only guessing, but as these concrete sections are few and far between, maybe their is a grip/safety issue with them. Why does a road have to be tarmac?
Only the germans can make flat conrete roads. Wilden lane is also in a far worse state than most of the romanian roads I drove my truck down last year.
on a good note, when I went past the end of it yesterday, it appears to have been scraped/ here's hoping for a full resurface. except it wont be the sub structure, only the wearing coat. The condition could be down to the marsh and water rising then freezing under the surface.
And finally, These kinds of works are always done at this time of year. the council's both know how much cash is left in the pot and also need to spend it before year end.
Wilden Lane does seem to deteriorate quickly compared elsewhere in the area. I suspect it is the obvious that the sub-structure simple wasn't designed for the levels or weight of traffic.
Having an industrial estate along it can't help matters in this regard.
As always I wonder how much money is spent on the constant patching compared to the one-off cost of redoing it 'properly'. Hah isn't that similar to the argument The Six are using regarding the Single Site - one large cost at multiple savings ;-)
And yes it is so very amusing to see how much work is being carried out as the end of the financial year approaches.
I traversed Wilden lane last evening. I was so disappointed once twenty yards into it. It's only been patch repaired. No sub structure improvements With a week of closures and no need to alternate traffic flow, I would have expected some better junctions between old and new. the substructure remains poor under some of these recovered sections.
In summary, Still quite bumpy and not a great drive, but it is better.
